DVD Review: Transformers Rescue Bots: Roll To The Rescue

Transformers was a big brand in the 1980s and it transformed into an even bigger brand over the last half-decade or so thanks in large part to the trio of Michael Bay films. Getting kids hooked to anything at a young age can lead to a lucrative revenue stream down the road and the animated DVD Transformers Rescue Bots: Roll To The Rescue does just that. As a less violent toon show aimed at smaller children, it introduces kids to the idea of vehicles that transform into robot heroes, each with a different personality. This one includes the cop car Chase, the fire truck Heatwave, the helicopter Blades, and the steam shovel Boulder.

The disc features five episodes with each presenting mostly harmless fun for elementary school-age viewers. Parents who think Transformers Prime may be too scary for their little ones would be advised to try out the relatively tame action of Rescue Bots. Its from the same creators. Appaently, these four color-coordinated robots were assigned a separate mission by Optimus Prime so it can be considered a spin-off series meant to find new recruits who eventually will be lured into the larger Transformers universe of cartoons, movies, and merchandise. Stories revolve around teamwork and doing what's right.

There is some humor here too. The episode "Four Bots and a Baby" is a variation on Three Men and a Baby (and previous incarnations) but features logic-driven machines doing things like sing Rock-a-bye Baby, and remarking about how the lyrics make little sense and are actually frightening to children. The voice cast includes Star Trek: The Next Generation's LeVar Burton and Party of Five's Lacey Chabert. Pre-schoolers just getting into action-based cartoons should find something to enjoy here.
