Blu-ray Review: Lilo & Stitch Collection
13 years ago, Disney fought with Tom Cruise as the animated film Lilo & Stitch and the actor's Minority Report opened against each other in June 2002 with the Spielberg sci-fi flick winning the weekend by a razor thin margin of only $416,913. But ultimately it was the Hawaiian girl who made more at the end of the domestic run finishing $13.7M ahead.
The toon was well-liked and was the second biggest animated blockbuster of that year spawning one of Disney's many direct-to-DVD sequels - Stitch Has a Glitch. Now the two films have been released in a 2-pack Blu-ray giving kids and parents a nice trip back to the Pacific islands.
For a direct-to-video followup, Lilo & Stitch 2 is actually quite solid. Credit can be given to the fact that most of the original voice cast was brought back in again. The notable exception is Lilo herself, but Dakota Fanning does a fine job taking over for Daveigh Chase who made some nice cash last decade voicing the little girl in most of the brand's incarnations including movies, television, and video games.
The set includes a Blu-ray disc with both films plus DVDs of each individual pic. While extra features show up on the older technology, the Blu-ray gets the naked treatment with no bonus material which is quite disappointing. Still, the HD picture and sound make it a nice addition to a Disney collection and children are sure to be entertained by the two features.
