Saturday Update

A stampede of new wide releases caused a major shakeup of the box office chart with the sci-fi adventure TRON: Legacy leading the way with a strong opening day tally of $18M on Friday, according to estimates, grossing more than the next five films combined. Disney's pricey PG-rated effects extravaganza should deliver one of the ten best December opening weekends of all-time. Helped by 3D surcharges, TRON could be headed for $45-48M for the Friday-to-Sunday period.

Warner Bros. debuted its family offering for the holidays with the 3D pic Yogi Bear which debuted to an estimated $4.6M on Friday, its first day in theaters. A three-day take of $15-17M seems likely which would be about one-third of the $44.3M debut on the same weeeknd in 2007 for Alvin and the Chipmunks, another old toon turned into a big screen live-action/animation hybrid for the holidays.

Jumping into the number three spot was Paramount's boxing drama The Fighter with an estimated $3.9M in its first day of nationwide play. A weekend take of $11-13M seems likely. Fox's fantasy sequel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader followed with an estimated $3.6M, off a troubling 57% from it opening day last Friday. Look for around $13M this weekend.

The poorly-titled How Do You Know, the new film from veteran writer/director James L. Brooks, opened softly on Friday with an estimated $2.6M and performed even worse than the filmmaker's last effort, 2004's Spanglish, which bowed to $3.1M in its first day on its way to a $8.8M opening on the exact same frame. Sony's all-star project with Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, and Jack Nicholson may reach $8M for the three-day period which could leave it in eighth place.

Fox Searchlight's acclaimed ballet thriller Black Swan was close behind with an estimated $2.5M after expanding into wide release. Look for $8-9M for the weekend. Proving that audiences won't be fooled into paying to see any star-packed film, The Tourist tumbled 58% to $2.6M on Friday and is headed for a $8-9M frame as well. Disney's 3D toon Tangled grossed an estimated $2.2M and should be headed for around $9M for the session as it continues to hold up well.
