Saturday Update
| The Twilight bite was
bloody good. Summit's new vampire love story was greeted by endless lines
filled with fans that sold out shows from coast to coast giving the smash
hit an estimated $35.7M on Friday, its first day of release. The massive
figure includes more than $7M from Thursday midnight shows. If the estimate
holds, it will give Twilight the second
biggest opening day of any film in 2008 trailing just The
Dark Knight ($67.2M). Thanks to intense fan frenzy that pulled
in millions of people on Friday, Saturday is expected to see a decline,
but by how much is the question. Look for a stunning three-day haul in
the $75-80M range giving the marketplace its third consecutive weekend
with a $60M+ debut.
This weekend's other new film with a one-word title was Disney's animated offering Bolt which grabbed an estimated $7M on Friday in its first day of play. Look for a big Friday-to-Saturday leap in ticket sales and a solid Sunday hold. That could put the canine cartoon in the vicinity of $26-29M this weekend. Challenging Bolt for second place over the weekend is the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. The Sony release tumbled 68% from its stellar opening day and collected an estimated $8.7M on Friday. That puts the 007 adventure on target to reach $28-30M for the frame. Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 54% for Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, 36% for Role Models, and 37% for Changeling.
