Saturday Update
The computer-animated insect pic Antz led the box office field on Friday with a potent $3.41M as DreamWorks added 364 more theaters to the film's run. Last weekend when it debuted, Friday business accounted for just one-quarter of the weekend gross as Saturday and Sunday saw brisk sales. Down just 19% from last Friday, Antz should be able to finish the frame with about $12-14M.
Polygram also enjoyed a strong sophomore performance as the Robin Williams spiritual adventure pic What Dreams May Come slipped a respectable 36% and grossed $3.18M on Friday. It is now on course to earn $10-12M this weekend.
Eddie Murphy was not as lucky as his latest comedy Holy Man saw a poor debut collecting just $1.54M on Friday, its first day of release. That amount was just marginally better than the Friday openings for Dead Man on Campus and Knock Off. The Buena Vista movie is on a trajectory to gross about $5M over the Friday-to-Sunday period.
Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 25% for Rush Hour, 34% for A Night at the Roxbury, 31% for Urban Legend and 36% for Ronin.
Be sure to check in on Sunday for the full weekend box office report based on studio estimates.
