Saturday Update
Universal captured the top spot on Friday with the release
of the shockfest comedy Brüno which
landed at number one with an estimated $14.2M in its first day of release.
That was much better than the $9.2M first day gross of Sacha Baron Cohen's
Borat from November 2006, although
that film debuted in 70% less theaters. Opening day averages were $5,100
from 2,757 for Brüno and $10,900
from 837 for Borat. With its built-in
audience, the Austrian fashionista pic should play like a sequel and see
a substantial portion of the weekend gross on Friday. A three-day take
of $34-37M seems likely for a solid average north of $12,000.
Summer sequels followed as Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs grossed an estimated $8.5M on Friday, down 51% from last Friday, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took in an estimated $7.5M, off 58%. Declines were larger than normal since last Friday was a holiday across much of the country. Saturday-to-Saturday drops are expected to be much slimmer since the Fourth of July holiday dampened sales a week earlier. Ice Age upped its total to $100.7M as of Friday and should bring in $26-29M over the weekend. The Autobots actioner lifted its cume to $322.6M on Friday jumping up to number 19 on the list of the Top 50 All-Time Domestic Blockbusters ahead of the $321M of 2007's Shrek the Third and the $319.1M of the original Transformers from that same summer. A $23-25M weekend tally for Fallen should result. The frame's only other new wide release I Love You, Beth Cooper was ignored by moviegoers. The Fox release grossed an estimated $2M and should end the weekend with just $5-6M. Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 57% for Public Enemies, 33% for The Proposal, and 33% for The Hangover.
