Saturday Update
In a surprising opening-day upset, Disney's new animated comedy Lilo & Stitch edged out the Tom Cruise-Steven Spielberg sci-fi thriller Minority Report on Friday. Lilo captured $12.3M in ticket sales while Report chased down $11.3M. While both were strong debuts, Report's A-list starpower had most industry analysts expecting an easy first place bow.
Lilo & Stitch attacked 3,191 theaters in its opening day and performed much like the studio's 1999 smash Tarzan which also premiered over the third frame of June with an opening-day tally of $11.5M on its way to a $34.2M weekend gross. Lilo should find itself with $34-39M over the Friday-to-Sunday session.
Minority Report enjoyed a stronger opening day gross than the last films from its megastar actor and director. Cruise's Vanilla Sky debuted with $8.4M last December while Spielberg's A.I. bowed with $10.1M one year ago. Report, a co-production between Fox and DreamWorks, looks to collect $32-36M over the weekend and will try to give Lilo & Stitch a challenge for the top spot.
The weekend's other new release, the Warner Bros. basketball comedy Juwanna Mann, grossed $2M on Friday, its first day of release, and should score around $6M for the frame.
Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were a hefty 57% for Scooby Doo, 46% for The Bourne Identity, and a steep 57% for Windtalkers.
Be sure to check back on Sunday for the complete weekend box office report featuring official studio estimates.
