Saturday Update

In what should be a thrilling fight to the finish for weekend bragging rights, Ben Stiller's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian edged out fellow sequel Terminator Salvation on Friday by a slim margain. Museum 2 took in an estimated $15.2M while T4 brought in an estimated $14.9M, adding to the $13.4M it took in on its opening day Thursday, bringing its cume to $28.3M.

Combined, both films brought in slightly less than last year's Memorial Day weekend tentpole Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which took in $30.6M on its first Friday, after opening the day before to $25M. The two new releases opened similarly to Madagascar which debuted Memorial Day weekend back in 2005 with $13.9M on its way to a $61M 4-day total. Since family films tend to play better Saturday and Sunday look for Museum 2 to edge out T4 over the long weekend.

Last weekend's #1 film, Angels & Demons, crumbled 64% from its opening Friday taking in an estimated $6M. Following closely behind was the sci-fi juggernaut Star Trek which fell 51% from last weekend to $5.8M. Look for another close battle for 3rd place between these two. The frame's other debut was Dance Flick which opened to an estimated $3.9M on Friday.
